Pictures from the last day of the 光之盛宴 ("Luminarie Festival") at the 國立中正紀念館 (Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall) in Taipei, which we accidentally came across while visiting the Memorial Hall's park to see 櫻花 (Cherry blossoms). The festival itself was a slightly weird event; the free view from outside and from the top of the memorial hall appeared better than what people buying the overpriced entry tickets got to see.
-
Taipei Lantern Festival 2011
(36 items)
The Year of the Rabbit recently started, so this year's Lantern Festival the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (國立國父紀念館) in Taipei was entirely in the name of the rabbit.
I had a chance to try a borrowed NIKKOR 50mm f/1.2 lens, which allowed me to get some amazing results without the help of a tripod. Very handy if your left hand is holding up an umbrella most of the time. :-)
-
觀霧 (Guan wu)

比來山 (Bi lai shan)
(13 items)
Our first and failed attempt at climbing 比來山 (Bi lai shan). It wasn't the weather or our legs but the simple fact that our planned trail turned out to be a dead-end after a few kilometers. We'll be back!
-
合歡山 (He huan shan) (Day 2)
(17 items)
The second day of our weekend in 合歡山 (He huan shan) was marked by fog and wind but that didn't stop us from climbing 合歡山東峰 (He huan shan east peak), 石門山 (Shi men shan), and 合歡尖山 (He huan jian shan). Even though not difficult to reach the former two also are among Taiwan's 100 highest mountains.

大山背 (Da shan bei)
(9 items)
On the only nice day of Chinese New Year we spontaneously decided to go to 大山背 (Da shan bei), a mountain (okay, it's really a hill but Taiwan has different standards ;-) in the area. So, we rode the scooter to the 樂善堂 (Le shan temple) which is the starting point of the 大崎棟桐花步道 ("Da qi dong Paulownia flower hiking trail") that leads to the top. Even though it was still somewhat foggy the view was quite nice. And after a week of rain and thick fog you take what you get!
-
觀音山 (Guan yin mountain)
(6 items)
When we saw a few rays of sun at the beginning of the Chinese New Year vacation, for which the worst weather immaginable was forecast, we immediately packed to hike up 觀音山 (Guan yin mountain). We took the bus to the 凌雲寺 (Ling yun temple) where some of the hiking trails start. However, the weather got worse and worse on the way and we hiked deeper and deeper into the thick fog that even covered the top of the mountain. I guess we'll have to go back another day, so until then these are the only photos we have ...

Hsinchu Science Park Christmas Decoration
(8 items)
The Hsinchu Science Park administration does not normally stand out for doing good things that make people's lives more enjoyable. It seems in 2009 most energy went into the design of the Christmas decoration in front of their building instead of a more sophisticated traffic concept. Well, at least I got some nice photos out of it. :-)

Taking mini-golf to the next level, we headed to Sunol for a few hours of strenuous paintball. Here's what it looks like when people from Logitech, Google, etc. exchange computers for guns and data for paint.

Kings Canyon National Park
(19 items)
Visit to the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park with my parents (day 2). Kings Canyon can't quite keep up with Sequoia when it comes to trees but it makes up for it with spectacular mountains and a few--we Swiss would probably append our famous "-li" diminutive--waterfalls.
-
Sequoia National Park
(14 items)
Visit to the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park with my parents (day 1). Also known as the "tree album". These trees actually are big and make Muir Woods look like a little toy forest. :-)

San Francisco by Fog
(9 items)
By now everybody should have seen pictures of beautiful San Francisco with the sun shining and a clear view over the bay. Okay, it's a noisy bridge that links Fremont and Palo Alto but I like bridges and bikes, so what better on a hot Saturday afternoon when the temperatures forbid staying inside? :-)
